The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) announces the three winners of its 2016 National Mobility Awareness Month Local Heroes Contest.

The winners are: John Rose of Lexington, Ky, in the senior category; Dave Hastings of Coopersville, Mich, in the caregiver category; and Steve Karmgard of Genoa, Ill, in the open/general category. Each winner will receive a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, according to a media release from NMEDA.

The “Local Heroes” campaign received 928 online entries and 1.1 million votes. A panel of industry experts reviewed the personal stories from the entries that received the top 10% of votes. From that, they selected the winning “Local Heroes.”

National Mobility Awareness Month, which occurs each May, is an annual celebration that encourages seniors, veterans, caregivers, and people with disabilities to enjoy active, mobile lifestyles. Approximately 600 mobility equipment dealers, manufacturers, and driver rehabilitation specialists in the United States and Canada support the awareness month, per the release.
