BraunAbility and Permobil announce a joint research and development venture to explore ways to improve the interface between wheelchairs and wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

The collaboration between wheelchair-accessible vehicle manufacturer BraunAbility and wheelchair manufacturer Permobil aims to increase independence and improve the total mobility experience for people with disabilities. It is hoped that the collaboration will lead to breakthrough concepts in mobility that could improve the lives of their mutual customers, per a media release from BraunAbility.

“Individually, our brands have contributed huge advancements in mobility over our long histories. Now our paths have converged, and we are confident the result will be technology that empowers our customers with unprecedented freedom and the autonomy to more fully experience and enjoy life,” says BraunAbility CEO Nick Gutwein, in the release.

“We try to work backwards from the customer, rather than starting with an idea for a product and trying to bolt customers onto it. BraunAbility and Permobil share this customer-centric philosophy, and together our teams will revolutionize the interfaces between chairs and vehicles,” states Permobil President Larry Jackson, in the release.

BraunAbility and Permobil are sister companies, both owned by Sweden-based investment company Investor AB.
