An orthopedic physical therapy seminar series seeks to improve proficiency with the application of manual examination and treatment procedures for the orthopedic physical therapist. The USC Orthopedic Seminar Series is slated to run from August 22 to February 22, 2015. The seminar series, held at the Jackson Clinics-Broadlands Office, Ashburn, Va, is intended to allow participants to gain skills in manual examination and treatment procedures for common musculoskeletal conditions. The USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy website notes that participants are provided the option of enrolling in the entire 15-day program or enrolling in 3-day modules designed to focus on a specific region of the body.
The site notes that the seminar’s objectives include gaining the ability to improve proficiency with the application of manual examination and treatment procedures. The site adds that 80% of class time is devoted to lab demonstration and practice sessions.

Additional objectives center on improving clinical reasoning within the context of (a) Description of Specialty Practice in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy published by the Orthopaedic Specialty Council, APTA and (b) the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice by the APTA, as well as improving knowledge in the DSP content areas, offering a framework to assist in studying for the OCS exam. The course’s final objective focuses on integrating basic principles of psychotherapy into physical therapy clinical practice, enabling participants in this course to improve their effectiveness with physical therapy management of patients who have mental disorders co-existing with their physical disorders.
