OrthoCare Innovations LLC, Washington, reports that former SADMERC medical directors Doran Edwards, MD, and Kenneth M. Nelson, MD, have joined its board of medical and scientific advisors. Edwards and Nelson, both former Medicare directors to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ SADMERC (Statistical Analysis Durable Medical Equipment Regional Carrier), will also consult with the Company on issues of coding, coverage, and payment for new technologies.

Nelson served as SADMERC medical director following 20 years as medical advisor to the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Health and Human Services, and served for 5 years as the only nonfederal employee member of Medicare’s Alphanumeric Working Group, which is responsible for coding durable medical equipment, prosthetics, and orthotics.

Edwards was the medical director to the SADMERC from 2003 until 2008. In this role, he worked extensively with high-level government officials to develop and implement national standards for both equipment billed to Medicare and Medicaid and the suppliers who provide that equipment. He was responsible for the national HCPCS Level II coding function, and served as medical advisor to the CMS Alpha Numeric Work Group for creation of new codes for all DME, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies.

Edwards was recently appointed to the CMS working group on competitive bidding.
