Ottobock recently launched its Genium Protector in the US and Canada. The product is designed as a cover for Ottobock’s Genium Bionic Prosthetic System. A company news release reports that the Genium Protector’s shin component is combined with a footshell and is built to work to protect against potentially damaging impact, environmental influences, and wear.

The product also offers users easy closure, to allow for simplified removal and donning, convenient charging even through clothing, and a smooth surface that allows clothes to slip on and off with ease. Additionally, the Genium Protector provides anti-slip fabric that assists in keeping socks from falling down, as well as a length adjustment option and anatomically shaped knee designed to facilitate kneeling.

Adam McPherson, North America market manager for Ottobock’s microprocessor-controlled knees, notes in the release that a particular emphasis was placed on aesthetics and durability in the product.

“…Its natural shape fills out clothing and provides visual balance to the sound limb and its robust design really works to reduce impact from jolts and wear and tear.  Best of all, the Genium Protector doesn’t impact the functions and dynamics of the Genium in any way, and we believe it’s a great solution to protecting the valuable investment of a prosthetic knee,” McPherson says.

The Genium Bionic Prosthetic System is engineered to allow for physical capabilities that include walking backwards, crossing obstacles in a more anatomically correct way, and climbing stairs step-over-step without massive compensating movement.
