Combining two functions in one, the new Mobility Assist from Biodex Medical Systems Inc features both a motorized lift assist and a walker in one ambulatory aid device.

Using battery-powered lifts, the Mobility Assist is designed to raise a patient from a seated to standing position while supporting and controlling the patient’s body weight. Then, once the patient is on his or her feet, the device acts as a walker to aid mobility.

The sit-to-standing support is achieved with no lifting required from therapists, nurses, or caregivers, according to the Shirley, NY-based company in a media release.

“It’s so important to get elderly patients up and walking to avoid circulation problems and disuse atrophy,” says Ed Behan, vice president of market development for Biodex, in the relese. “Not only does this product ensure safety of patient and clinician, it gives the patient a sense of independence—which is the greatest motivation you can offer.”
