According to a recent news release, a physical therapist from the NC-based organization BreakThrough Physical Therapy potentially has potentially pinpointed an effective treatment for bowel incontinence and constipation without costly surgery or undesirable side effects of medication.

The news release reports that the cost for bowel incontinence treatments in the US has reportedly rise from $34 million in 1998 to $57.5 million in 2003. Jolene Faught, PT, pelvic rehabilitation and women’s health specialist at BreakThrough Physical Therapy, notes that medications can serve as a quick fix for incontinence and constipation, but may become costly and exhibit negative side effects in the long run. “Physical therapists with advanced training can provide very effective treatment programs for both incontinence and constipation that can help patients avoid high medical costs, long recovery periods, complications, and undesirable side effects,” Faught explains.

A study conducted encompassing this specialized physical therapy, the news release reports, indicated that participants exhibited significantly reduced constipation problems, less physical discomfort, fewer worries and concerns, and improved quality of life after seeing their physical therapist.

The news release notes that the treatment for pelvic rehabilitation involves comprehensive care addressing dietary factors, spine/hip issues, pelvic floor muscles, abdominals, and effective breathing.
