Santa Rosa Orthopaedics, in a media release, offers three tips for helping to maintain healthy joints.

A recent study on rheumatoid arthritis sheds light on the importance of maintaining a lifestyle to help keep joints healthy in the long run, according to the release.

The release suggests that the following tips may be helpful for maintaining healthy joints:

The first is to maintain a healthy diet, and keep one’s weight within a healthy range. The joints that bear the most weight, such as knees, hips, and back, are most often affected by arthritis and chronic joint problems. The more weight a person carries, the more wear and tear is put on the joints, per the release.

The second tip is to keep moving. Researchers suggest that aerobic exercise can help reduce joint swelling, per the release. Low-impact exercises such as swimming or bicycling may be recommended for patients with existing joint pain. Also per the release, persons who sit at a desk all day may have a higher risk for joint pain.

Third is to eat a balanced diet, which could help manage weight and provide a variety of nutrients for overall health. The recommended diet is one that is low in solid fats, saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), added sugars and refined grains is recommended, per the release.
