An article in MedPage today takes a look at boxing and the effects of “punch-drunk” syndrome on fighters, which according to the article, “is characterized by slowed thinking, by word-finding problems, by a slow shuffling or unsteady gait, by tremor and, in its worst stages, severe dementia.”
Some boxers with “punch-drunk” syndrome develop Parkinson’s disease as a result, which is what happened to Muhammad Ali. In his case, the disease progressed very quickly, the author notes.
