Now available is Aging and Disability: Beyond Stereotypes to Inclusion, a book that summarizes the presentations from a workshop discussing stereotypes surrounding people with disabilities. The workshop, sponsored by AARP and hosted by the Forum on Aging, Disability, and Independence, featured panelists who discussed topics such as the science of disrupting stereotypes in everyday life, strategies that may change public discourse, and more. The panelists, who represented fields such as science, business, fashion design, and television, spoke at The New School’s Parsons School of Design. Among the questions discussed: How do stereotypes affect the health and independence of aging adults and those with disabilities? How do they impact the industries that interact with these populations? And what are some opportunities to disrupt the narrative and change perceptions of what it means to be older or have a disability? [Source: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine]
