The Neurotrauma Program at Barrow Neurological Institute, Phoenix, has reportedly become the first treatment center in the nation to receive Joint Commission certification in both traumatic brain injury (TBI) and spinal cord injury.

The process to receive the Joint Commission Disease-Specific Care Certification took more than 3 years and involved two 24-hour site visits by the certification organization. The certification lasts 2 years and will involve ongoing assessment of the institute’s neurotrauma program, per a media release from Barrow Neurological Institute.

“It’s an honor,” says neurosurgeon Nicholas Theodore, MD, director of Barrow’s Neurotrauma Program, in the release.

“This recognition is only given to hospitals who maintain the highest standard of care for their patients. We are proud to be the first to receive this certification for the treatment of both traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury,” he adds.

Barrow Neurological Institute is part of St Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.
