Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-based Freedom Concepts Inc celebrates its 25th anniversary in April as a manufacturer of custom adaptive tricycles, alternative seating, and mobility devices.

The company was founded in 1991 by Ken Vanstraelen to meet a request to build a bicycle for a young boy with cerebral palsy. Since that first bike, the company has evolved throughout its 25-year history to now develop and manufacture 18 different models of adaptive tricycles, which are custom built with special seating, foot plates, headrests, and/or other features to suit each particular rider’s exact specifications as well as his or her comfort and safety needs, according to a media release from the company.

Each custom-built bike is a result of information collected during an in-person meeting with a Freedom Concepts Inc representative or a medical professional such as a physical or occupational therapist, who assesses the rider’s specific needs, condition, and mobility level.

“From the very first bike, Freedom Concepts Inc has been all about providing the freedom to ride, the freedom to be independent, and the freedom to live a normal life. It’s amazing to see the impact our bikes and chairs have made in so many different countries throughout the world,” shares Vanstraelen, Freedom Concepts Inc’s president and CEO, in the release.

Alternative seating products include Chill-Out Chairs, launched in 2006. These include Rock’er and Roll’er Chill-Out Chairs, which can be found in schools, hospitals, and therapy centers throughout the United States and Canada, per the release.

Future plans for the company include increasing its worldwide expansion and further aligning itself with its tagline and mission: “Creating a Cycle of Mobility.”
