Island Dolphin Care (IDC), Key Largo, Fla, is geared towards rehabilitating youths who have not yet responded to traditional therapies. The center works with children with various disabilities from autism to cancer to cerebral palsy, as well as with wounded soldiers.

In July, a local Martin County 9-year-old and his family entered the program. During the course of the week that Sam McIntosh spent at IDC, he received classroom therapy sessions, as well as therapy in the water swimming with dolphins. Sam’s main goals were to improve communication and socialization. A tailored plan was developed by his personal therapy team and his goals would be addressed in classroom therapy sessions and in the water.

Throughout the week communication continued to increase. Now Sam responds to requests to use full sentences and to speak up more frequently and consistently than before.
