Burke Rehabilitation announced it will begin offering an intensive comprehensive aphasia treatment program (ICAP). Aphasia is a language disorder impacting the ability to speak, read, write, and understand words. It can develop as a result of stroke, brain injury, or non-degenerative neurological disorders. ICAPs are highly specialized and Burke’s will be the only ICAP in Westchester County, NY.

Burke Rehabilitation will offer this intensive service through its Speech Language Pathology Department on an outpatient basis at its White Plains campus (785 Mamaroneck Ave.). The program will run for four weeks, with participants attending five days per week for four hours each morning. Burke will deliver the aphasia treatment program in small groups of 4-6 individuals.

Participants will engage in language-based exercises, small group activities, complementary therapies such as neurologic music and occupational therapy, and more. Social workers and neuropsychologists will provide caregiver support. The program is best designed for individuals who have already participated in individual speech therapy and are ready for an intensive group approach.

Burke will offer the first intensive comprehensive aphasia treatment program in June, with additional groups planned throughout the calendar year.

The program is generously supported by Burke benefactors Barbara and Steven Kessler. “We admire, respect, and salute the incredible caring and hard-working staff at Burke. Burke is poised once again to set a national example of excellence with this Aphasia Center,” said Mr. Kessler.
