concussionThe Western New York Head Injury Seminar, set for January 4, is slated to include featured speaker Kevin Guskiewicz, PhD, ATC, (pictured right) and other recognized experts in sports-related concussion. A news release reports that the Buffalo, NY-based conference will be held at the Buffalo-Niagara Convention Center and place a primary focus on the identification and management of head injuries and concussions in youth and scholastic sports, according to a recent news release.

The release notes that the conference is free and open to the public, with a target audience of medical professionals, scholastic and community sports leaders, educators, coaches, and parents of youth athletes. Featured speaker Guskiewicz is the Kenan Distinguished Professor, director of the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, the release reports.

Guskiewicz directs the UNC Injury Prevention Research Center, and served on the NCAA Concussion Committee and the NFL Head, Neck and Spine Committee. The release also notes that event speakers will explore the significance of immediate removal from activity, coordination of medical care, and return to academic and athletic involvement.

According to the release, the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association and the New York State Athletic Trainers’ Association will be presenting the event. The conference’s objectives center on teamwork and its ability to bolster the identification and management of head injuries and concussions related to youth and scholastic sports.
