Though women dominate both physical therapy and occupational therapy workforces, findings from the 2013 US Census estimate that female PTs earn on average 87.7% of what male therapists earn, while female OT salaries are estimated at 88.7% of their male counterparts.

Analysis of the census information by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) notes that the differences in pay between genders is above average for PTs and OTs when compared to the overall field of healthcare professionals. Pay inequalities break down as follows:

Median Annual Earnings (full-time employment)

Male PT: $80,411  —  Female PT: $70,509

Male OT: $75,740  —  Female OT: $67,164

Payscale disparities were evident among professions related to both PT and OT practice, including physical therapy assistants and aides, occupational therapy assistants and aides, and speech-language pathologists (SLP).

Male PTAs and Aides: $46,313  —  Female PTAs and Aides: $41,098

Male OTAs and Aides: $50,311  —  Female OTAs and Aides: $48,606

Male SLP: $68,346  —  Female SLP: $60,552

There was almost n0 annual earnings gap between male and female massage therapists. The census figures reported males’ earnings at $29,272, while females were paid $29,240, or about a 99.9% equivalency in median annual earnings.
