The Methodist Hospital System has announced the addition of Kenneth Podell, PhD, (pictured right) a neuropsychologist focused on concussion and head injuries, as co-director of the Methodist Concussion Center in Houston, Texas. A Methodist Hospital System news release notes that Podell will also serve as the team neuropsychologist consultant for the Houston Texans, Houston Astros, Houston Dynamo, and Rice Athletics.

According to the news release, Podell recently led the division of neuropsychology and served as director of The Sports Concussion Program and co-director of The Concussion Clinic at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Mich. Podell also worked with a team of neuropsychologists in the early 1990’s to develop the ImPACT test, which is reportedly used by the NFL, NHL, and MLB, and worldwide to test athletes for concussion.

Howard Derman, PhD, director of the Methodist Concussion Center, neurologist consultant for the Houston Texans and Houston Dynamo, reports that Podell, “not only brings solid clinical expertise in the diagnosis and management of concussion, but he will also expand our community outreach initiatives to educate student athletes, coaches, and parents,” Derman emphasizes.

The release adds that Podell is a Fellow of The National Academy of Neuropsychology, with prior academic appointments at The Medical College of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, Wayne State University, and University of Windsor.

Podell has served as team consultant for the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, and Detroit Red Wings. He has also served as a clinical consultant to Major League Baseball.
