The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently determined that it did not update its "sometimes therapy" list to include the canalith repositioning CPT code for 2011, which led to claim denials for physical therapists who submitted for payment using the 95992 code, according to the American Physical Therapy Association, Alexandria, Va.

As promised, the agency has issued a Change Request, with a July 5 implementation date, notifying contractors that they should pay PTs for the 95992 retroactive to January 1.

PTs will need to resubmit all claims that have been denied; no automatic adjustments will be made. It is possible that some contractors may be able to update their systems before July 5, so PTs should check with their contractors as to when they can resubmit for payment.
