In Your Nerves Are Having Shoulder Surgery—the latest book in Minneapolis-based OPTP’s neuroscience education series—author Adriann Louw aims to help prepare patients for shoulder surgery and the postoperative recovery.

Metaphors and illustrations are used to help explain how shoulder nerves react before, during, and after the surgery, to help patients understand what to expect during the experience and feel a sense of comfort as a result.

Among the lessons, according to a media release from OPTP, are: how the body’s nervous system is like an alarm system; how to turn down the sensitivity of that alarm system; how the brain and nervous system collaborate to produce pain; and how to take control of nerves in order to lessen pain.
