Ottobock Wheelblades

Ottobock, Minneapolis, reports that it is now the exclusive global distributor of a new product engineered to allow wheelchair users to move through the snow with ease. Wheelblades, developed by Swiss inventor Peter Mayer, use a clamp lock to secure the device to the front wheels, the company notes. The product’s bindings are also designed to fit wheels in a variety of sizes, including children’s strollers.

An Ottobock news release adds that the Wheelblades parallel the function of snowshoes, spreading weight over a greater surface area and allowing the front wheels to glide more easily, featuring steering that operates in much the way a ski does. The company also articulates its excitement in bringing a product to the market that targets improved mobility and quality of life.
