During July 2012’s National Veterans Wheelchair Games, Elyria, Ohio-based company Invacare, 32-year sponsor of the multi-event sports and rehabilitation program, reports that 20 of its employees were on hand to provide assistance to the veterans in transport to and from the games. The company also offered wheelchair repair to the event’s participants in order to maintain the efficiency of athletes’ chairs. Invacare reports that it saw an estimated 200 athletes during the week of the Richmond, Va-based games for repair and minor assistance with products that ranged from power chairs, to manual chairs, and sports equipment.
The National Veterans Wheelchair Games is geared toward military service veterans who have sustained spinal cord injuries (SCIs), amputations, or certain neurological problems and require wheelchairs for sports competition. A news release notes that the event, which is hosted by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), attracts more than 500 athletes each year.
Events reportedly included archery, basketball, bowling, weight lifting and handcycling.
