Louisiana-based Ochsner Health System and Pennsylvania-based Select Medical announce in a press release that they have formed a strategic partnership to jointly open a new, 60-bed acute inpatient rehabilitation hospital in New Orleans in 2016.

According to the release, this new partnership creates a limited liability company between Ochsner, a regional referral center, and Select Medical, which provides specialized healthcare, including inpatient rehabilitation services.

The partnership will reportedly initially focus on managing Ochsner’s current acute rehabilitation services provided in a 29-bed unit, which is licensed separately as a hospital, within the Ochsner Medical Center-Elmwood Campus.

Construction of Ochsner Rehabilitation Hospital is expected to begin in early 2016. Once complete, it is expected to employ 180 therapists, nurses, and other specialists, and will offer treatments for patients with spinal cord and brain injuries, stroke, amputation, neurological disorders, and musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions, the release explains.

David S. Chernow, President & CEO of Select Medical, says in the release that with the new hospital, Select Medical plans to build on the success that Ochsner already achieves for patients in need of physical rehabilitation.

“Ochsner Rehabilitation Hospital will serve the growing need for inpatient rehabilitation in and around New Orleans. We look forward to a long partnership to help people in Louisiana rebuild lives,” he continues in the release.

Warner Thomas, president and CEO of Ochsner Health System, believes that the right partner was found in Select Medical.

“Part of serving as a national destination for healthcare is ensuring that patients and their families have access to the right setting for the right outcome, and that’s especially true when acute rehabilitation is needed,” he shares in the release.

“Together, our shared commitment to patient safety and high-quality outcomes will benefit Louisiana for years to come,” he continues in the release.

The Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey, part of Select Medical’s network of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, will provide significant support for the new hospital—including specialized services and enhanced access to research and clinical education, per the release.
