The 23rd International Seating Symposium (ISS), Moving into the Age of Accountability, will be held March 8-10, in Orlando, Fla. One of the highlights of the event will be this year’s keynote speaker, Marilyn Hamilton, vice president of global strategic planning, Sunrise Medical Laboratories, and founder of Quickie Designs.

The focus of this year’s symposium is accountability–a timely theme as funding sources are becoming more limited, and as certification is becoming a requirement for most. The program will include papers, instructional courses, and panel discussions address both clinical issues and service delivery challenges in difficult times of reimbursement. Additional sessions will cover ethics, advanced case studies, service delivery models, and equipment provision to veterans and recently injured soldiers. The closing discussion will be Moving Forward on Continuous Quality Improvement of Assistive Technology Services.

This year, ISS is presenting several pre-conference workshops of interest for attending suppliers, therapists, physicians, educators, and other professionals involved in the provision of wheeled mobility and seating.

On March 6, a review course will be held for practitioners and suppliers preparing for the RESNA ATP and ATS examinations. A new feature this year also to help with exam preparation is a separate half-day pre-conference course on the practice of augmentative and alternative communication. On the agenda for March 7, are two half-day sessions, including How Do Your Services Measure Up?a discussion of various outcomes measures in the field, and a workshop on power wheelchair electronics.

Additional full-day workshops include: Policy and Funding for Mobility Assistive Equipment, sponsored by the National Registry of Rehabilitation Technology Suppliers; an entry-level program Using Assessment Information to Plan Seating Interventions; Pediatric Seating and Mobility, and Clinical Practice Guidelines for Preservation of Upper Limb Function Following Spinal Cord Injury.

The main symposium will begin on Thursday, March 8.
