August 8 marks the 35th year of Craig Hospital’s largest patient outing “Hobie Day,” which includes more than 300 staff and volunteers, Hobie Cat sailboats, power boat rides, BBQ, and music. According to a news release issued by the Englewood, Colo-based hospital, approximately 50 Craig Hospital patients from all around the nation with paralysis and brain injury will participate in the outing as part of the hospital’s therapeutic recreation program.

Hobie Day is intended to offer patients the opportunity to experience what is possible following catastrophic injuries via “applied therapy,” using functional skills. The release notes that patients and families will sail or ride in boats, navigate the beach, learn about the necessity of taking care of themselves in extended periods of exposure to heat and sun and enjoy BBQ. In the company of nurses, therapists, and many other departments, patients will test their rehabilitation and self-care skills in real world conditions.

Patients typically sail for 45 minutes and trained Craig staff will be available to help patients transfer safely in the Hobie Cats, the release says.

The event is scheduled from 9 am to 3 pm at the Cherry Creek Reservoir in Englewood, Colo.
