The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) recently published the comprehensive reference book, “Postsurgical Rehabilitation Guidelines for the Orthopedic Clinician,” for therapists around the country to follow step-by-step examples to develop their own postsurgical treatment plans. The textbook, which includes a 60-minute instructional DVD, incorporates 45 comprehensive guidelines, covering all aspects of evidence-based postsurgical rehabilitation for musculoskeletal disease.

The textbook draws its information from the orthopedic rehabilitation services provided by HSS, and includes sections covering arthroplasty, hand, pediatric, spine, and sports medicine rehabilitation. It features easy-to-follow guidelines enabling practitioners and students to reference procedures and recommended rehabilitation strategies. Additional features include photos and illustrations depicting how to correctly perform the described, as well as the phases of treatment defined in tables that clearly show goals, precautions, treatment strategies, and criteria for advancement.

Formally launched at the 2006 American Physical Therapy Association annual conference in Orlando, “Postsurgical Rehabilitation Guidelines for the Orthopedic Clinician” was the combined effort of HSS-affiliated physical therapists, occupational therapists, and athletic trainers, who each played an integral role in developing a valuable reference tool.
