A step sensor available through Brown Medical Industries, headquartered in Spirit Lake, Iowa, is designed to be a lightweight, economic, and comfortable device for patients with drop foot.

Users can adhere the product’s pressure switch to the insole of their shoe, beneath the heel, and wrap the vibrating band around the leg just below the knee.

The Step Sensor produces a gentle vibration when the heel strikes the ground in order to increase confidence in gait and provide a reminder to lift the toe, the company adds. The Step Sensor can also register when the user is standing for a period of time and will wait for the user’s cue before vibrating again.

The device is engineered to use small vibrating motors rather than TENS and is available without a prescription.
