Children with special needs and their siblings with have the opportunity to attend the Detroit Institute for Children (DIC)’s annual summer camp. DIC reports that the camp will be held at its Detroit headquarters on Wayne State University’s campus daily from July 29 to August 1. DIC facilitated the camp to accommodate its patients who may be unable to participate in conventional summer camp programs. DIC notes that it opted more than a decade ago to hold annual summer camps featuring activities specifically designed for its patients.
The activities are reportedly developed and led by trained recreational, art, and music therapists who are familiar with the children’s needs, sensitivities, and the activities they enjoy. A news release from DIC notes that the camp is open to participated aged 3 to 12 years old from its rehabilitative and therapeutic centers in Detroit, Walled Lake, St. Clair Shores, and Royal Oak. Patients and siblings have the ability to attend any or all of the half-day sessions at no cost. Daily attendance is limited to 60 children.
Mark Clearly, DIC CEO, states, “We are very excited to host our 11th annual camp, and pleased to be able to provide this experience for our patients—‘the children of the DIC.”
